Background
It all started with an Instagram page called “theindianproverb” .
The idea was to introduce proverbs of different regional languages of India to millennials. I was sceptical and remained so for three months or so because no one really connected to it. But then, as I kept persisting, something changed, and I started gaining attention from my readers. This collection is a culmination of those efforts, of that persistence. It took me many months of hard work to illustrate these proverbs and write these tales.
The approach I have taken in this collection is an illustrated representation of the proverb along a little tale to go with it. I think this approach perfectly suits the times and the ways we consume wisdom and entertainment these days. Now, all the proverbs in this book are not proverbs in the literal sense. A few are famous lines that Indians use so commonly in our everyday life that they are no less than proverbs for us. A few are “Dohas” from individuals like Tulsidas and Kabir, great saints, who wrote such immortal verses that they have turned into proverbs.
While, during translation, I have tried to stay close to the essence of the meaning, at the same time I have strived that the translation reads like a proverb and not like dry commentary.
